Yellow Jackets Begin Practice on Monday.
The Yellow Jackets had an early morning on Monday as the first practice of the season tipped off inside the Portier Center. This will be the first of thirteen preseason practices leading up to their season opener November 7 vs Theodore. Head Coach Phillip Murphy embarks on his 13th season at McGill, and does so facing the challenge of replacing three starters and four of the top seven scorers from the 2018-19 team that reached the Regional Finals for the fifth straight season.
“You could really tell the difference our strength and conditioning (led by Jake Johnson) has made on our guys in the off season. We were able to get a lot done on day one and had great energy, but the real test will be can we sustain that energy throughout this week when we aren't 100%.”
McGill’s roster features 13 players, 5 of whom contributed to last season regional final appearance. Seniors, Murphy Stapleton, and Dallas Daffin both return for their 2nd season on the varsity roster. 6’9” big man Cole LaRue who is committed to continue his playing career next season at Kennesaw State University returns as a senior, and a three year letterman. Sophomore Barry Dunning had a very successful summer receiving numerous offers from Alabama and Auburn amongst others. Senior from Corpus Christi Catholic School, Jack Veasey rounds out the returning squad. Veasey was excited to be back out on the floor for his second season on the varsity roster.
“I think practice went great today. We started out with a lot of energy. It feels great to finally get back to work. We are excited about taking everything one day at a time and just getting better.”
Coach Murphy’s staff remained in tact this off season. Daniel Peebles returns for his 4th season as head freshman coach. Reed Hotard returns for his 9 season as JV head coach, and varsity assistant. Terry Buckner and Mark Shelley (class of 1972) will be on the varsity bench for their 10th and 13th seasons.
Yellow Jacket fans can get their first look at the team on Saturday, November 2 when the team host the Mobile County Officials Clinic exhibition game. The Regular season opens up Thursday, November 7 against Theodore in the Portier Center. The game is set for 7:30 pm.
